Starter Kit. Idea 440 of 500. Cluster 23

Shared workspaces for women with childcare attached, in Colombo and the district towns

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

The single largest unused asset in the country is sitting at home, and the reasons are practical, not attitude.

The first step

Walk round one district town and find a landlord with an empty upper floor, then ask 10 women who work from home or freelance whether they would pay for a desk each month if a supervised children's room were next door. Ask the landlord for a trial rate on the first month. The proof is 10 desk bookings and a space held for you.

Who pays first
A freelancer or remote worker with young children who cannot work at home, and pays for a desk because the children are cared for in the next room.
What leaves today
Graduates who could earn stay home for want of a place to work near their children; a shared space converts that trained time into income.

Ask first

  • the local council (Municipal Council, Urban Council or Pradeshiya Sabha). Ask whether an upper floor may be used as offices with a children's room.
  • the area Medical Officer of Health. Ask what a room for minding children must have before it opens.

Check before you spend

Confirm the building may be used for desks and childcare together, the fire exits, a trained carer for the children's room, and insurance for both.

Find out these three numbers

  1. How many women would pay for a desk each month?
  2. What monthly price covers a desk and the children's room?
  3. What does the landlord want for the floor?

A comparison from the book

Sri Lanka. Chapter One

"The single largest unused asset in Sri Lanka is an educated woman sitting at home, and there are millions of her."

The desk and the children's room together turn a woman at home into a woman at work.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
