Refrigerated three-wheelers for the fish and dairy trades

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

The village cannot get a box to the container port. The gap is small firms, not big ones.

The first step

Spend two mornings riding with a fish vendor and a milk collector on their rounds, and note how much ice they use, how much stock goes bad, and what they sell at a discount by noon. Get a quote to fit an insulated, chilled box to a three-wheeler, and ask both what they would pay to rent one by the month. The proof is a named monthly rent from a vendor.

Who pays first
A fish vendor who sells at a loss by noon because the ice has melted, and would pay rent for a chilled vehicle that lets them sell all day.
What leaves today
Fish and milk lose value by the hour in the heat; cold transport keeps the freshness that commands a higher price for the producer.

Ask first

  • the area Medical Officer of Health. Ask what standard a chilled box must meet to carry fish or milk for sale.
  • Department of Motor Traffic. Ask whether fitting an insulated box changes a three-wheeler's registration or inspection.

Check before you spend

Confirm the food-handling standard for chilled fish and milk in transit, whether the fitted vehicle needs fresh approval, and that the insurance covers the cargo.

Find out these three numbers

  1. How much stock does a vendor throw away or discount each day now?
  2. What does fitting one insulated, chilled box cost?
  3. How much more would a buyer pay for fish that arrives cold?

A comparison from the book

Zermatt. Chapter Five

"the family had founded a company to design and build the taxis themselves"

A small vehicle built for one local job, and built nearby, can carry a whole trade.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
