Learning-support centres for children with dyslexia and other learning difficulties, with trained teachers and a published method
The mechanism, from the book
177,000 qualify every year and 45,000 get a state university place. The other 130,000 are a market only partly served, and the polytechnic is not a second choice when it leads to a job.
The first step
Ask 3 school principals in your town how many children in each class struggle to read or count in a way tuition has not fixed. Find one teacher trained to support children with dyslexia, write down the method they use, and run a 6-week after-school group for 5 children whose parents pay a fee. Parents who see progress and sign up for a second term are the proof.
- Who pays first
- A parent whose child is bright but falling behind, who has paid for tuition that did not help and will pay for teaching that does.
- What leaves today
- Children with learning difficulties are written off as slow and leave school without the qualifications they could have earned.
Ask first
- Data Protection Authority. Ask what consent you need to keep records of children's assessments and progress.
- Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. Ask whether a course training teachers in a learning-support method can be accredited.
Check before you spend
That each teacher is trained in the method you publish, a safeguarding plan with checked staff, and parents' written consent before any assessment.
Find out these three numbers
- What do parents pay now for extra help with reading?
- How many children in one town need this kind of support?
- What does training one teacher in the method cost?
A comparison from the book
The fridge by the road. Chapter Six
"It is not character. It is accumulated proof."
Parents trust a centre whose method is published and whose results build up year after year.
The test
Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
From the appendix of Why Not Sri Lanka? by Dr Maheshika Halbeisen. The idea and the mechanism are the book's; this kit was written for the site.
