Starter Kit. Idea 323 of 500. Cluster 16

Nursing colleges to the British and Australian standard, with the return clause built into the fees

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

177,000 qualify every year and 45,000 get a place. The other 130,000 are a market that nobody has built for, and the polytechnic is not a second choice when it leads to a job.

The first step

Get the published entry requirements for overseas-trained nurses from the British and Australian regulators, and list what a local course would have to add to meet them. Then ask 20 families with a child interested in nursing what they would pay for a course leading there, with a return clause. Deposits or signed interest from families are the proof.

Who pays first
A family whose child wants to nurse abroad and will pay for a course that meets foreign standards, accepting a clause that brings them back.
What leaves today
Nurses leave to work abroad with no return, so the island pays to train them and keeps none of the value.

Ask first

  • Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. Ask how a private nursing course is registered and what it must teach.
  • Sri Lanka Medical Council. Ask whether nurses trained privately must register before working here.

Check before you spend

That the course meets the published entry rules of the British and Australian regulators, and that the return clause is a fair, signed contract a family understands.

Find out these three numbers

  1. What would families pay for a course leading abroad?
  2. How many hospitals here would hire nurses under the return clause?
  3. What does a qualified nurse earn here during the return years?

A comparison from the book

Melbourne. Chapter Eight

"A nurse trained at public expense in Sri Lanka who then works for 30 years in Melbourne"

A return clause lets the place that paid for the training collect some of the return.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
