Starter Kit. Idea 305 of 500. Cluster 15

A coding school with an employer guarantee, paid for by the employer at the end

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

The proof exists in Malabe. What is missing is a thousand small versions of it.

The first step

Visit the hiring managers of five software firms and ask what a junior developer must be able to do on day one, and what they spend hiring one now. Ask whether they would pay a placement fee at the end for a graduate who met that standard. Signed letters saying yes, with the fee written in, are the proof, and the day-one list becomes the syllabus.

Who pays first
A software firm hiring junior developers, which pays a placement fee because it saves the cost and risk of hiring untrained graduates.
What leaves today
School leavers without a university place drift into low-paid work, when a few months of targeted training would make them employable.

Ask first

  • Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. Ask whether a short coding course must be registered and how it could be accredited.
  • Information and Communication Technology Agency. Ask which skills software firms report short among junior developers.

Check before you spend

Whether a fee-taking training course must be registered, what the employer letters commit to in writing, and how a student who is not placed is treated.

Find out these three numbers

  1. What does a software firm spend to hire one junior developer now?
  2. What placement fee would a firm sign for in writing?
  3. How many students could one teacher bring to the day-one standard?

A comparison from the book

Switzerland's apprenticeships. Chapter Fourteen

"Swiss studies find most firms earn back what an apprentice costs them before the apprenticeship even ends."

Employers pay willingly when the trainee earns back the cost, so build the course around that proof.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
