Starter Kit. Idea 296 of 500. Cluster 15

Remote-work hubs in Kandy, Galle and Jaffna with fibre, power and a lawyer who knows the tax

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

The proof exists in Malabe. What is missing is a thousand small versions of it.

The first step

Agree with a guesthouse or cafe owner in Kandy, Galle or Jaffna that has fibre and backup power to host desks for one month on a revenue share. Post the offer to remote-worker groups abroad at a monthly desk price, and ask a lawyer what a one-page tax note for foreign remote workers would cost. Paid desks, and the questions people ask before paying, are the proof.

Who pays first
A remote worker from Europe who wants a month somewhere warm with reliable internet, steady power and clear answers on tax.
What leaves today
Remote workers who could spend months and money on the island choose places that answer the power, internet and tax questions first.

Ask first

  • Inland Revenue Department. Ask how a foreign remote worker staying some months here is treated for tax.
  • the local council (Municipal Council, Urban Council or Pradeshiya Sabha). Ask whether renting desks in a guesthouse needs a change of use or a trade licence.

Check before you spend

Whether the host building may be used for paid desks, whether visitors on a tourist visa may work remotely, and what insurance covers equipment.

Find out these three numbers

  1. What monthly desk price do remote workers abroad accept for a warm city?
  2. How many hours a month does the host building lose power?
  3. What would a lawyer charge for a plain tax note for visitors?

A comparison from the book

India plus one, Colombo. Chapter Twelve

"They come because costs match or undercut India's, staff stay longer, and Chennai is a short flight away."

People choose a base for steady costs and calm reliability, so sell the power, the fibre and the clear answers.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
