Fish-market tours at Negombo at dawn with breakfast after, the way Tokyo sold Tsukiji
The mechanism, from the book
An ocean eight times the size of the land, and a fishing fleet that sells its catch on the beach. The Maldives built a tourism industry on water Sri Lanka has more of.
The first step
Go to the Negombo fish market before dawn and ask one trader whether they will explain the auction to a small group for a fee per head. Arrange breakfast with a cafe nearby at a fixed price. Then offer the tour to the front desks of hotels in Negombo and take names for the first morning. A full first group, paid in advance, is the proof that the market can be sold as it is.
- Who pays first
- A hotel guest in Negombo with one free morning, who wants something real to do and will pay for breakfast and a story.
- What leaves today
- The market is already a spectacle at dawn, but nobody is paid for showing it, so the visitor's morning is spent inside the hotel.
Ask first
- the local council (Municipal Council, Urban Council or Pradeshiya Sabha). Ask whether guided groups at the fish market at dawn need permission.
- Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. Ask whether a dawn market tour must be run by a registered operator.
Check before you spend
Whether the market's traders and managers agree to groups, where visitors may stand safely, and what the breakfast café needs for food approval.
Find out these three numbers
- What would a visitor pay for the dawn tour with breakfast?
- How many visitors can the market take without getting in the way?
- What would one trader want per head?
A comparison from the book
Europe. Chapter Five
"In Europe people queue to watch glass being blown"
People pay to watch real work done well, and then to taste it.
The test
Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
