Starter Kit. Idea 120 of 500. Cluster 5

Spa-product manufacturing to European cosmetic regulations, so a Colombo brand can sit in a Zurich pharmacy

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

Ayurveda is a system of medicine the world already recognises and seeks out. The demand is there; what Sri Lanka needs is more of its own names, known and asked for abroad.

The first step

Select one product that you or a local maker already sell, a body oil or a balm, and ask a cosmetic safety assessor who works to European rules for a written quote: what the product file would need and what it would cost. Then email three natural-product shops in Switzerland or Germany with a photo and that plan. A buyer who says they would stock it once compliant gives you the case to spend.

Who pays first
A small Colombo spa brand that wants to sell in Europe and needs a maker whose products already pass European rules.
What leaves today
Island herbs and oils leave as ingredients because local makers cannot pass European cosmetic rules; a compliant factory lets the finished jar leave instead.

Ask first

  • Sri Lanka Standards Institution. Ask what testing they offer for cosmetic products meant for Europe.
  • Sri Lanka Export Development Board. Ask what help exists for small firms exporting cosmetics to Europe.

Check before you spend

Which European rules a product must meet, who abroad will take legal responsibility for it, and what testing and records buyers expect.

Find out these three numbers

  1. What does meeting European cosmetic rules cost for one product?
  2. Which pharmacies abroad would stock a Sri Lankan brand?
  3. How large must a first production run be?

A comparison from the book

Costa Rica. Chapter Eleven

"But the trained technicians stayed, the suppliers stayed, and the skill of meeting the world's safety rules stayed."

The skill of meeting the world's safety rules is what lasts and earns.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
