Drone photography as a premium package
The mechanism, from the book
An app that tells people what is happening tonight converts a day visit into a 2-night stay.
The first step
Check the current rules for flying drones near your chosen site with the authority that sets them, and pick a location where flying is allowed. Shoot one sample reel of a couple or family, and set a price for a package. Offer it to wedding planners and villa managers. One paid package is the proof.
- Who pays first
- Couples marrying or honeymooning on the island, and villa owners who need aerial photographs for their listings.
- What leaves today
- Aerial images of the island are often shot by visiting crews; a local operator keeps the premium on the island.
Ask first
- Department of Archaeology. Ask whether flying a drone over the site is allowed and who can grant permission.
- Department of Wildlife Conservation. Ask whether drones are allowed over parks and wildlife areas.
Check before you spend
Whether you need aviation permission to fly for money, whether the site allows drones at all, and what insurance covers a crash.
Find out these three numbers
- What will visitors pay for a drone package?
- How many flying days does the weather allow each month?
- What do a good drone and its insurance cost?
A comparison from the book
Sigiriya. Chapter Five
"Add a drone for the premium package."
Drone footage is the premium package on top of the hired photographer.
The test
Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
From the appendix of Why Not Sri Lanka? by Dr Maheshika Halbeisen. The idea and the mechanism are the book's; this kit was written for the site.
