Coaching exports: Sri Lankan coaches contracted to clubs abroad through one agency

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

The country's best-known export is cricket, and little of the business around it is built at home.

The first step

Call the coaching or development officer at 5 cricket clubs abroad, in countries with many Sri Lankans abroad, and ask one question: would they take a Sri Lankan coach on a season contract, and at what fee. At the same time, ask 3 qualified coaches you know whether they would travel for that fee. One club naming a price and one coach saying yes is your first placement.

Who pays first
A club abroad short of qualified coaches for its juniors, which pays one agency fee rather than recruiting a coach from scratch.
What leaves today
Sri Lankan coaches already go abroad one by one, and the placement fee and the terms of the contract are captured by nobody on the island.

Ask first

  • Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment. Ask how a coach's contract abroad should be registered before the coach leaves.
  • Department of the Registrar of Companies. Ask how to register an agency that places coaches on contracts abroad.

Check before you spend

Confirm whether placing workers abroad needs an agency licence, that every contract is checked before signing, and that each coach's qualifications can be shown.

Find out these three numbers

  1. What fee would a club abroad pay for a season?
  2. How many qualified coaches would sign up with you?
  3. What does arranging one placement cost in travel and visas?

A comparison from the book

New Zealand. Chapter Eleven

"When 100 small producers from the same country sell into the same foreign market, a buyer plays them off against each other"

One agency speaking for the coaches keeps the fee up and the standard known.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
