Starter Kit. Idea 464 of 500. Cluster 24

Consumer testing of products against their claims, from cinnamon grade to solar-panel output

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

The one thing. A country where people do not expect the rules to hold cannot build anything else, and proof can be manufactured by private people, one published record at a time.

The first step

Buy three packets of cinnamon labelled with a top grade from three shops, photograph the labels and the receipts, and ask a testing laboratory what it would charge to check each against its claim. Publish whatever the test shows. Then ask two exporters whether they would pay to have their own products tested and marked. The proof is one paid test.

Who pays first
An honest exporter who loses sales to cheaper mislabelled goods, and pays for an independent test because it proves the difference to buyers.
What leaves today
True cinnamon sells cheap when buyers cannot tell it from imitations; an independent test is the proof that lets the grade command its price.

Ask first

  • Sri Lanka Standards Institution. Ask which laboratories can test a product against the claim on its label.
  • Department of Export Agriculture. Ask how cinnamon grades are defined, so a test can check one.

Check before you spend

Confirm the testing laboratory is recognised, that every product is bought openly with a receipt, and that each maker can answer before results are published.

Find out these three numbers

  1. What does one laboratory test cost?
  2. Would readers pay to see the results each month?
  3. Would honest makers pay to be tested and named?

A comparison from the book

Japan. Chapter Eleven

"a Ceylon mark that means something because an inspector will not let a bad batch carry it"

A label only means something if somebody checks it. Be the somebody, and publish what you find.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
