Video editing, animation and game art studios selling to studios abroad
The mechanism, from the book
The proof exists in Malabe. What is missing is a thousand small versions of it.
The first step
Make one short piece to the kind of brief a studio sets: a 30-second animation, an edited trailer or a set of game art assets. Post it where studios hire, and send it directly to the production managers of 20 small studios abroad with a day rate. A first paid test job is the proof, and repeat work from the same studio is the business.
- Who pays first
- A small studio abroad with a deadline and not enough artists, which pays a day rate for work that matches its style.
- What leaves today
- Artists and animators trained here work for local clients or move abroad, while foreign studios pay well for the same work.
Ask first
- Department of the Registrar of Companies. Ask which company form suits a studio paid by production companies abroad.
- Inland Revenue Department. Ask how payments from studios abroad are taxed and recorded.
Check before you spend
Who owns the finished work, whether the music, fonts and models you use are licensed for commercial use, and what each studio's contract demands.
Find out these three numbers
- What day rate do small studios abroad pay for this work?
- Which software and file formats do the studios insist on?
- How many test jobs does a studio give before regular work?
The test
Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
From the appendix of Why Not Sri Lanka? by Dr Maheshika Halbeisen. The idea and the mechanism are the book's; this kit was written for the site.
