Starter Kit. Idea 188 of 500. Cluster 8

Toasted coconut chips, salted or spiced, as a packed snack for supermarkets abroad

Back to the idea

Written for this site as a starting point, not from the book. Rules and fees change: ask the bodies named below before you spend money.

The mechanism, from the book

The whole-nut principle. Sri Lanka's coconut exports grew by more than 40% in 2025, faster than any other major export, which makes this the chain already moving fastest. Almost every part of the nut has a market, and much of the value still leaves the island in bulk, under somebody else's name.

The first step

Toast 3 batches of coconut chips, one salted, one spiced and one plain, and pack 50 bags of each in sealed pouches with the island named on the front. Sell them at a market stall or a café counter for 2 weekends and count which flavour sells out first. Then send the winner, with a price per carton, to 3 snack buyers or Sri Lankan grocers abroad and ask for a trial order. One order is the start.

Who pays first
A snack buyer abroad who wants a crunchy, plant-based snack with a clear origin on the bag.
What leaves today
The flesh leaves as desiccated coconut in bulk sacks, and the snack made from it is toasted, packed and named by someone else.

Ask first

  • Sri Lanka Export Development Board. Ask which buyers abroad have asked for packed coconut snacks from Sri Lanka.
  • the area Medical Officer of Health. Ask what a small room toasting and packing snacks for sale must show first.

Check before you spend

Food-premises approval for the toasting room, the shelf life of a sealed pack, and the labelling rules of the country you plan to sell into.

Find out these three numbers

  1. What does a bag of coconut chips sell for in a supermarket abroad?
  2. How many nuts make one bag of chips?
  3. What do packing film and printing cost for each bag?

A comparison from the book

Switzerland. Chapter Sixteen

"appendix of this book asks for 15 things to be made from a coconut"

A packed snack is one more way to sell the nut finished instead of whole.

The test

Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
