Starter Kit. Idea 118 of 500. Cluster 5
Elder wellness months for the retired parents of Sri Lankans abroad, with medical cover and family visits built in
The mechanism, from the book
Ayurveda is a system of medicine the world already recognises and seeks out. The demand is there; what Sri Lanka needs is more of its own names, known and asked for abroad.
The first step
Check with five friends abroad whether their retired parents would spend a month on the island if rooms, meals, a doctor's visit and outings were arranged, with medical cover in place. Find a guesthouse owner willing to host them at a monthly rate. Put both on one page with a price and share it with the families. One family paying a deposit starts it.
- Who pays first
- Adult children abroad who want their retired parents to spend a safe month at home, and who will pay for the arrangement.
- What leaves today
- Retired Sri Lankan parents abroad spend their savings on care abroad; a safe, arranged month brings that spending, and the family visits, back to the island.
Ask first
- Sri Lanka Medical Council. Ask what registration doctors caring for elderly visitors need.
- the area Medical Officer of Health. Ask what standard a place caring for elderly guests must meet.
Check before you spend
That medical cover is real and in writing, that the nearest hospital can take emergencies, and that families abroad agree what is included.
Find out these three numbers
- What would families abroad pay for a month of care?
- How many parents of Sri Lankans abroad would come?
- What does daily medical cover cost?
A comparison from the book
Sri Lankans abroad. Appendix
"The single most valuable thing a Sri Lankan in Melbourne or Zurich can do"
Sri Lankans abroad are the buyers here, and their parents are the guests.
The test
Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
From the appendix of Why Not Sri Lanka? by Dr Maheshika Halbeisen. The idea and the mechanism are the book's; this kit was written for the site.
