Starter Kit. Idea 111 of 500. Cluster 5
Post-surgery and post-cancer recuperation stays, with a doctor on call and the sea outside
The mechanism, from the book
Ayurveda is a system of medicine the world already recognises and seeks out. The demand is there; what Sri Lanka needs is more of its own names, known and asked for abroad.
The first step
Talk to a doctor near a quiet coastal guesthouse and ask whether they would be on call for recovering guests for a fixed monthly fee. Then contact the welfare group of a Sri Lankan association abroad and ask whether members recovering from surgery would consider a 4 week stay with a doctor nearby and family able to visit. A list of interested names, with the month each would come, is your proof.
- Who pays first
- A Sri Lankan family abroad whose parent or sibling needs weeks of quiet recovery, and who would rather pay for it by the sea than at home.
- What leaves today
- Recovery weeks are spent, and paid for, in the country where the operation happened, although the island offers the sea, the care and the family.
Ask first
- Sri Lanka Medical Council. Ask what registration doctors caring for guests from abroad need.
- the area Medical Officer of Health. Ask what standard a place caring for recovering patients must meet.
Check before you spend
That a registered doctor is on call, that the nearest hospital can take emergencies, and that guests' own insurers accept the arrangement.
Find out these three numbers
- What would a recovering patient pay per week?
- What does a doctor on call cost each month?
- Which hospitals abroad would refer patients?
The test
Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
From the appendix of Why Not Sri Lanka? by Dr Maheshika Halbeisen. The idea and the mechanism are the book's; this kit was written for the site.
