Jungle meditation retreats
The mechanism, from the book
Ayurveda is a system of medicine the world already recognises and seeks out. The demand is there; what Sri Lanka needs is more of its own names, known and asked for abroad.
The first step
Find a quiet forest property whose owner would host a 3 night trial, and agree a price per head for rooms and meals. Ask a meditation teacher you trust whether they would lead the sessions for a fee. Then post the dates and the full price in two online meditation groups abroad and count the deposits that arrive within a fortnight. Five deposits is a business.
- Who pays first
- A professional abroad who meditates at home and wants a week of silence in real forest, with every piece of logistics already solved.
- What leaves today
- The island's forest and its meditation tradition are known abroad, yet the retreat week itself is rarely sold from here with a date, a price and a teacher.
Ask first
- Forest Department. Ask whether a retreat in or beside forest land needs permission.
- Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. Ask how a retreat with rooms registers as accommodation.
Check before you spend
That the land can legally host a retreat, that teachers are qualified, and what safety measures cover guests deep in the forest.
Find out these three numbers
- What do meditation retreats charge per week abroad?
- How many guests can the site host quietly?
- Which teachers would lead retreats for a season?
A comparison from the book
Anuradhapura hub. Appendix
"The hub is the pilgrim centre, the Sil programme and the"
The book's sacred-city hub plans a Sil programme, so connect with those teachers.
The test
Does it keep value that now leaves the island, or build the proof that lets somebody else do so?
From the appendix of Why Not Sri Lanka? by Dr Maheshika Halbeisen. The idea and the mechanism are the book's; this kit was written for the site.
